Job Title: Child and Youth Care Worker Department: Residential Care Reports To: Service Coordinator Employment Type:** Full-Time/Part-Time Job Overview The Child and Youth Care Worker is responsible for providing direct support and care to children and youth in a residential or community setting. The role focuses on nurturing a safe, supportive, and structured environment that meets the emotional, physical, and social needs of each individual. This position involves implementing individualized support plans, assisting with daily activities, and promoting positive life skills, personal growth, and independence among the young people in care. Key Responsibilities 1. Direct Support and Supervision Provide hands-on support, guidance, and supervision to children and youth, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. Monitor and manage behavior, using approved intervention strategies to promote a positive environment. Build trusting relationships with children and youth, helping them develop essential skills and coping mechanisms. 2. Individualized Support Planning Collaborate with program supervisors and case workers to develop and implement individualized care plans for each child. Identify and respond to each youth's unique needs, challenges, and strengths. Participate in regular team meetings to review and adapt care plans as required. 3. Life Skills Development Assist children and youth with daily routines, including hygiene, meal preparation, schoolwork, and recreational activities. Plan and lead activities that promote personal growth, healthy relationships, and life skills development. Encourage and support educational, vocational, and extracurricular participation. 4. Documentation and Reporting Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, documenting any incidents, progress, or concerns related to each child. Complete daily logs, behavior reports, and progress notes in a timely and organized manner. Communicate regularly with supervisors and other staff members about each child's development and needs. 5. Advocacy and Collaboration Act as an advocate for the needs and rights of the children and youth in care. Liaise with families, schools, social workers, and other community agencies to coordinate support services. Attend meetings, case reviews, and training sessions as required. 6. Crisis Intervention and Conflict Resolution Respond promptly and effectively to crisis situations, ensuring the safety of all residents and staff. Utilize de-escalation techniques and follow agency protocols for handling behavioral issues and conflicts. Support children in managing emotions, behavior, and stress in a constructive manner. Qualifications Education: Diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. Experience: Previous experience working with children and youth, preferably in a residential or community setting. Certifications: First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and Medication Administration certification preferred. Skills and Competencies Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with children, youth, and colleagues. Empathy and Patience: Demonstrated understanding and patience when working with youth facing emotional or behavioral challenges. Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication abilities for effective documentation and collaboration. Problem-Solving: Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations and use problem-solving skills to handle crises effectively. Cultural Sensitivity: Awareness and respect for diverse cultural backgrounds and needs. Working Conditions Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Physical demands may include lifting and standing for extended periods. Some exposure to challenging behavior from residents.
