Job Title: Developmental Support Worker (DSW) Department: Client Support Services Reports To: Program Supervisor or Case Manager Employment Type: Full-Time/Part-Time Job Overview The Developmental Support Worker (DSW) plays a critical role in providing support, care, and guidance to individuals with developmental disabilities, enabling them to reach their full potential in day-to-day activities and life skills. The DSW assists clients with personal care, social skills, community integration, and independent living skills, fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive environment that encourages personal growth. This role may involve working with children, youth, adults, or elderly individuals in various settings such as group homes, residential facilities, and community-based programs. Key Responsibilities 1. Direct Client Support - Assist clients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, and feeding, ensuring dignity and respect in all interactions. - Encourage and support clients in participating in recreational activities, hobbies, and community outings to enhance socialization and personal fulfillment. - Support clients in learning life skills, such as budgeting, meal preparation, and household management, to promote independence. 2. Behavioral and Emotional Support - Use positive behavior management techniques to address behavioral challenges and provide emotional support to clients. - Document and implement Individual Support Plans (ISPs), incorporating client goals, behavior strategies, and skill development initiatives. - Collaborate with the clinical team to implement therapeutic approaches and monitor client progress. 3. Health and Safety - Administer prescribed medications as per established protocols, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to health and safety standards. - Monitor clients’ health and report any changes in physical or emotional well-being to the appropriate supervisor or healthcare provider. - Ensure a safe environment for clients by following safety protocols, managing risk, and maintaining cleanliness in living areas. 4. Documentation and Reporting - Keep detailed records of clients' daily activities, progress, incidents, and any behavioral or health concerns. - Complete regular progress reports and participate in team meetings to discuss clients' needs, challenges, and achievements. - Maintain confidentiality and adhere to privacy policies when documenting and sharing client information. 5. Community Integration - Facilitate clients’ integration into the community by organizing and accompanying them to appointments, social events, and volunteer opportunities. - Assist clients in navigating public transportation, accessing local resources, and engaging in community-based programs. 6. Collaboration and Communication - Work closely with other support staff, healthcare professionals, and family members to provide consistent, quality care aligned with each client’s ISP. - Communicate regularly with supervisors and case managers regarding clients’ needs, concerns, and progress. - Provide compassionate support and encouragement to clients while maintaining professional boundaries. Qualifications - Education: Diploma in Developmental Services, Social Services, or a related field. - Experience: Prior experience in a developmental support or similar role is preferred; experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is highly valued. - Certifications: First Aid/CPR certification, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), and training in medication administration are assets. Working Conditions - May involve working in a variety of environments, including group homes, residential facilities, or community settings. - Shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is often required. - Physical demands include assisting with mobility, lifting, and performing personal care tasks as needed.
