Job description
Job Title: Educational Assistant (EA) Department: Education Support Services Reports To: Classroom Teacher and Principal Employment Type: Contract Job Overview The Educational Assistant (EA) provides direct support to students and teachers in the classroom, contributing to an inclusive and supportive learning environment. EAs work closely with teachers to support students with varying needs, including those with special educational requirements, by implementing individualized strategies, assisting with academic tasks, and fostering social and emotional growth. This role is crucial in ensuring that all students have access to effective learning opportunities. Key Responsibilities 1. Student Support - Assist students with their academic work, adapting teaching materials as necessary to meet individual learning styles and needs. - Support students in understanding and completing assignments, reinforcing learning objectives, and providing encouragement. - Aid in implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and tailored strategies for students with special needs. 2. Behavioral Assistance - Assist in managing classroom behavior by promoting positive reinforcement techniques and maintaining a structured environment. - Provide one-on-one support to students needing additional guidance, helping them stay focused and engaged. - Work with the teacher to implement behavioral management strategies, documenting and reporting behavior concerns as needed. 3. Social and Emotional Support - Foster a nurturing and inclusive environment by assisting students in developing interpersonal and social skills. - Provide emotional support to students, helping them manage challenges, develop resilience, and build confidence. - Encourage positive peer interactions and model respectful and empathetic behavior. 4. Classroom Preparation and Organization - Prepare and organize classroom materials and resources, such as lesson plans, instructional materials, and activity setups. - Assist with setting up and organizing classroom activities and maintaining an orderly and safe learning environment. - Support the teacher in preparing visual aids, displays, and learning centers to enhance the educational experience. 5. Communication and Collaboration - Work closely with the classroom teacher, sharing observations and feedback to improve student support. - Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff, fostering a collaborative environment. - Participate in team meetings, providing insights on student progress and suggesting improvements to support plans. 6. Administrative Duties - Assist with record-keeping, tracking student progress, attendance, and any other relevant information. - Document and report incidents, progress, and any special considerations required for student safety and well-being. - Help organize and coordinate field trips, school events, and extracurricular activities as required. Qualifications - Education: Certificate or diploma in Educational Support, Child and Youth Work, or a related field. - Experience: Experience working with children in a classroom setting, especially those with special needs, is preferred. - Certifications: First Aid/CPR certification and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training are considered assets. Skills and Competencies - Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to engage with students, teachers, and parents effectively. - Patience and Empathy: Ability to work calmly with students of varying needs, showing empathy and understanding. - Organizational Skills: Strong ability to manage multiple tasks, prepare materials, and support teachers in a busy classroom environment. - Adaptability: Flexible approach to addressing unique student needs and adjusting to different teaching styles. - Collaboration: Team player who can work well with teachers, administrators, and parents to support students. Working Conditions - Typically based in a classroom setting within a school environment. - May involve assisting students with physical needs, such as mobility, toileting, or eating, depending on the assignment. - Regular school hours, with potential for additional hours during school events, meetings, or extracurricular activities.
