Job Title: Personal Support Worker (PSW) Department: Care and Support Services Reports To: Service Coordinator Employment Type: Independent Contractor Job Overview The Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides compassionate, hands-on assistance to clients in various settings, including long-term care homes, hospitals, retirement homes, and community environments. The PSW is responsible for helping clients with daily activities such as personal hygiene, mobility, meal preparation, and medication management. This role is essential in ensuring the dignity, comfort, and safety of each client, while supporting their independence and enhancing their quality of life. Key Responsibilities 1. Direct Client Care - Assist clients with personal hygiene activities such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting. - Support clients with mobility, including transfers, ambulation, and positioning. - Monitor and assist clients during meals, ensuring proper dietary needs are met and encouraging hydration. 2. Medication and Health Monitoring - Assist with medication reminders and ensure medications are taken as directed by healthcare professionals. - Monitor and report changes in clients’ physical or emotional health to the supervisor or healthcare team. - Provide support for basic health assessments, such as checking vital signs as required. 3. Household Assistance - Assist clients with light housekeeping tasks, such as tidying, laundry, and maintaining a clean and safe living environment. - Help with meal planning and preparation according to dietary restrictions and preferences. - Support clients in organizing daily activities to promote an orderly routine. 4. Emotional and Social Support - Build trusting relationships with clients by engaging in friendly conversations and showing empathy. - Encourage client participation in recreational and social activities to enhance their mental and emotional well-being. - Respect and uphold each client’s dignity, confidentiality, and cultural background. 5. Documentation and Communication - Maintain accurate records of client activities, progress, and any changes in their health or behavior. - Document all services provided in compliance with agency and regulatory guidelines. - Communicate effectively with the care team, reporting concerns promptly. 6. Safety and Emergency Response - Follow established health and safety protocols to minimize risks to clients and staff. - Act promptly and calmly in emergency situations, providing appropriate care and notifying relevant personnel as needed. - Ensure clients’ living areas are free from hazards and equipped with necessary mobility aids and safety devices. Qualifications - Education: Certificate or diploma in Personal Support Worker (PSW) program or equivalent. - Experience: Previous experience as a PSW or in a similar caregiving role is preferred. - Certifications: First Aid/CPR certification required; additional healthcare training (e.g., Dementia Care, Palliative Care) is an asset. Skills and Competencies - Compassion and Empathy: Ability to provide sensitive, respectful, and compassionate care to clients of varying needs. - Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills to engage with clients, families, and the care team effectively. - Observation Skills: Attentive to changes in clients’ physical, emotional, and mental health. - Time Management: Able to prioritize tasks efficiently to ensure all clients’ needs are met. - Physical Stamina: Capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting and assisting with mobility.
